Various national network for research and education (NREN) offer a high-quality information and telecommunications infrastructure for the research and education sector in Europe.
TERENA has taken the initiative to bring together information about different key aspects of the work of NRENs not only in the EU, but also in other parts of Europe. The 2003 edition of the TERENA Compendium of NRENs, funded by the IST programme, contains 60 pages of tables and graphs, giving detailed information about the networks, their users, traffic and funding. The accompanying website (http://www.terena.nl/compendium/), contains a host of additional information from the more than 50 NRENs that participated in the Compendium survey. The Compendium is available free of charge from the TERENA Secretariat - secretariat@terena.nl, for as long as stocks last.

GTP, the next-generation open standard protocol for telematics, builds on and extends the existing specifications,while allowing reduced development effort and increasing cost efficiency. Major car manufacturers have shown an active interest in GTP, which has been developed by a working group of the ERTICO-managed Telematics Forum. In addition, the ERTICO-led, EC-funded E-MERGE project (working to harmonise the pan-European in-vehicle E-Call service chain) already plans to adopt version 1.0 of the specifications as the standard of choice for testing in-vehicle E-Call capabilities as part of the project. EVI project to study electronic vehicle identification
After a successful kick-off meeting on 18 February, the new ERTICO-coordinated, EC co-funded EVI (Electronic Vehicle Identification) project began its work on a comprehensive study of the requirements for and feasibility of an EU-wide implementation of EVI. The study will include technical and non-technical aspects ranging from legal (data privacy, etc.), institutional (what parties, rights and obligations, etc.), operational (how is it deployed and operated), and socio-political areas (general acceptance, etc.)The final outcome of this investigation will provide the basis for decision making by the EC about how to proceed on EVI. The project also invites interested stakeholders (telecom industry, car manufacturers, suppliers, user organisations) to participate in its Consultation Group which will meet at key stages of the project to discuss results and provide feedback.
