Satellite navigation is becoming more and more involved in many fields of applications. Especially in the transport world there is a strong demand on high quality positioning and navigation information. In addition to this, the non-transport sector (agriculture, survey, timing, etc.) is using GNSS in an intensive manner. Today GPS does not fulfil the stringent requirements for many safety of life applications (aviation, Search-and-Rescue) or high logistic applications (fleet management). LORAN-C is a pulsed radio navigation aid, which gives position in the horizontal plane. It is used both in hyperbolic and in circular mode. All US owned LORAN-C assets overseas were transferred to the host nations. This has resulted in an extensive modernisation of the system for civil purposes world-wide. New stations have been or are being installed either as a national initiative or in groups as in Asia and Northwest Europe. Furthermore LORAN-C can be used for the broadcast of DGNSS data. This service is called Eurofix and is in implementation phase at the moment. LORAN-C or Chayka (similar Russian system) stations are upgraded to broadcast low-speed data reliable over ranges up to 1,000 km. As the LORAN-C and Chayka infrastructure are already available, the upgrading to Eurofix is a minor and low-cost operation. Eurofix is very successfully on air at Sylt (Germany) since February 1997. Aim of the programme is the test and verification of the LORAN-C/Eurofix concept as well as EGNOS regarding the special requirements of certain user groups. Especially the capabilities to enhance EGNOS with LORAN-C/Eurofix have to be identified.
