Objectives

A fundamental issue of the NAFFF project has been the investigation of the potential to integrate navigation systems for vehicles into mobile units for cyclists and pedestrians, the main focus being on the common use of digital maps. The on-board unit of the vehicle provides the possibility to pick out a number of special digital maps which may be transferred to the mobile unit (with its limited memory and calculation capability).

Within the NAFFF project, a prototype has been developed and tested. Based on the current position, the mobile user (PDA) requests data from the map server (navigation system). The user has to choose the proper map from the list offered by the server (road map, cycle/mountain bike map, pedestrian map). The selected map will be transferred to the PDA via Bluetooth. The user’s position will be permanently determined using GPS in order to display it on the map. Additional information (text and pictures) associated to points of interest (POI) can be obtained by clicking on certain icons. The internet site of the POI can be accessed via mobile phone which is connected to the PDA through an infrared interface.

The NAFFF project has also investigated into several components for a future realisation of the prototype. The main object was the analysis of positioning components in the field of navigation for pedestrians and cyclists. As available modules rely nowadays on GPS as sole means of navigation, failures have to be taken into account while receiving signals in unfavourable environment. A multi-sensor-box has been developed to cover GNSS outages by dead reckoning.
