Objectives

The Berlin Activity “Sicheres Gebäude” (Pro ^ Building) is the first attempt to create a scientifically based test- and information basis for comprehensive solutions regarding safety and security within buildings. It is open to the public and is intended to be a permanent instrument for investors and for the planning of modern buildings.
Telematica contributes with examinations of locating of persons in buildings. A technology analysis will be accomplished as well as the evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of individual systems regarding their use in buildings. Based on research in one or more test buildings an optimized system combination will be proposed.

Features

Within the framework of Pro ^ Building, Telematica is responsible for the task “Basic technology: Positioning and Navigation in a building”.

Based on different technologies, there are several approaches for locating and navigation of persons in buildings (e.g. security staff, service staff, residents, employees, visitors, emergency staff).

The use of a radio navigation system (e.g. GPS, LORAN-C) provides positioning in arbitrary buildings, but the signal reception is system-specifically restricted. The usage of positioning technologies based on communication systems provides the availability inside the building, but involves disadvantages arising from their conception as communication media instead for navigation purposes.

Mobile sensors and map matching are approved in the area of transportation telematics. Their use for locating people causes difficulties which do not occur in vehicles (horizontal storage, user dynamics, weight and size). Stationary sensors provide partially very good results inside of buildings, but their installation and maintenance is expensive while positioning is only possible in properly equipped buildings and interaction between different systems is still widely unexplored.

Project Plan

Telematica offers the following work packages:

  • Technology analysis
  • Future developments
  • Conceptual realisation
  • Choice of appropriate test environment
  • Preparation of tests
  • Execution of tests
  • Evaluation
  • Future prospects

Potential Benefits

A future system that matches strongest requirements (safety of the building) will probably consist of a well-defined combination of different systems and sensors. It is assumed that there may be different developments of the basic principle for buildings with proper infrastructure and for those without.

Project Status

The project is running.
